Disconnected Response

The main goal here for the students was to see how long they could go without using a computer at all for any of there homework or any other thing they wanted to accomplish.  My main question was, why even try to do this?  Your computer is basically your life in the present day.  You can use it to pay off bills, check your e-mails, calendars, social networking, movies, and even the date or what time it is.  The students found out very quickly that they had a lot of extra time on their hands that they did not have prior to giving up there computers. They found themselves very bored and struggling to find things to do at first. One of the students had a job that required her to use a computer, now if this was actually your career in life it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to be giving up your computer for weeks at a time. Her boss said since its for another class he would let it slide and she could continue her job.
Once the student started getting assignments they started to notice that using an old typewriter was not only a hassle but very time consuming and started to make there life extremely stressful. Some of the assignments were also not offered anywhere else but on the computer which made it very difficult to get some things done. Falling behind on e-mails also had some of them concerned, because some of them were very important and required immediate replies.  On the positive side the students said they seemed to be a little more organized and they found themselves walking around outside and conversing with people they usually wouldn’t. In the long run you cannot go without a computer forever because so many things must be accomplished by technology you just end up pushing your problems onto someone else that has to do it for you. In my eyes giving up your computer is definitely not worth it, but I can see where some people do need somewhat of a realization of how much time they truly spend in front of there screen just surfing the web and accomplishing nothing at all.
